The 1st day of the annual HBMHL Entry Draft arrived amid much fanfare. While there were quite a few players the Rams were interested in during the 1st round, there was one in particular that piqued their interest due to the future status of the club's roster.
Prior to the draft the Rams were involved in preliminary talks with a couple of clubs in possibly either moving their #7 overall pick to improve the competitiveness of the team or to move up in the draft. The player the Rams were most interested in was goalie Carey Price and figured moving up in the draft from #7 would be necessary to get their man. Alas, it was not to be as the Rams' GM Poelker could not work out a deal. Poelker said, "The price was just too high to do anything. We could not work out the deal that seemed most beneficial to the Alberta franchise."
With that disappointing development the Rams retained their 7th overall pick.
The Rams then turned their attention to netminder Dan Ellis, in hopes of landing him with the 7th pick. As it turned out that was not to be either.
When the time for the pick arrrived, netminder Erik Ersberg from Sala, Sweden was available and the Rams management team decided to select Erik.Upon Ersberg's arrival at the podium he was presented with the traditional team jersey and practice cap with, of course, the number 08 on the jersey in honor of being selected in the '08 HBMHL Rookie Draft.
After Erik donned the jersey and cap, GM Poelker said, "We are proud and pleased to welcome Erik to the Alberta Rams. We hope he can be an integral part of our organization for years to come."
Hopefully the pick pans out for the Rams and we see Ersberg be the club's netminder in the years to come.
With Brodeur being the greybeard he is, there's no doubt that the future will require a top notch goalie whenever Brodeur decides it's time to hang 'em up. While the club has Theodore backing up Brodeur at this time, he's not viewed as the heir apparent to Brodeur.
It's entirely possible that Theo may be expendable now.
We'll see what the future brings.
This is I.P. Daley signing off for now from the 2008 HBMHL Entry Draft here in beautiful downtown Boston.
