(Hartford,CT) The New England Sharks today announced the contract buyout of forward Eric Lindros. The 33 year old native of London, Ontario played 1 season for the Sharks collecting 11 goals and adding 14 assists in 53 games last season. Lindros was in the final year of a $4.1 million contract. The buyout will cost the Sharks approximately $1.3 million. Lindros is now an unrestricted free agent and is in current negotiations with expansion Philadelphia Bulls. If he signs with the Bulls, he'll join former Sharks teammates Joni Pitkanen and Andy McDonald who were picked up in the expansion draft.
Currently, the Sharks are courting free agents of their own. Right now, unrestricted free agents Rod Brind'Amour, Peter Forsberg, Greg de Vries and Sergei Samsonov are in talks with the team. The team is said to coming close to signing Brind'Amour, who split time with Alberta and New York last season. Brind'Amour and Samsonov lost to the Sharks in the playoffs last year when they were with the Highlanders. It would be interesting to see both players join their division rival.
Finally, the Sharks replaced departed assistant coach Jim Schoenfeld with the Head Coach's brother, Brent Sutter. And it's no surprise that Steve Yzerman's replacement as assistant captain is now officially, Sidney Crosby. He joins HBMHL all-time leading scorer Paul Kariya as the other assistant to Captain Dany Heatley.
Will Brind'Amour find himself centering a line with Kariya and Jason Pominville? We might find out by Sunday.
