The Werewolves of London (not the London Werewolves as some people refer to them as) seem to generate no respect year after year, despite winning the Cup last season. Had the Werewolves come out of no where, and just made the playoffs, then they could be referred to as a Cinderella team, but London finished in second place in the entire league by 2 points, behind their division rival the New York Highlanders.
In the HBMHL Season Preview, the writer decided to take potshots at Coach Donald S. Cherry's decision not to have a captain named to the team. "This team is a team in the true sense of the word, and no one player is ahead of any of the others, therefore there is no captain named. As well with no captain named the refs must come to the bench to explain all decisions as per the rule book."
Owner and GM Mark Wendling was also not very impressed by the preview. "There is no doubt that Rob Blake is in the twilight of his career, but the leadership he brings, and the cost of all the top defensemen in the league is what drove our offer up. To suggest there is something sinster to Blake's signing is criminal. "
GM Wendling was also cranky with regards to the trade of Rod Brind'amour. "The league has to step in. This is ridiculous, a team signs him to an incredible amount of money as an unrestricted free agent, just to turn around and trade him. We entered into talks with Mr. Brind'amour in good faith, and I believe he signed his contract with the Sharks he thought it was in good faith, but to be moved immediately to Portland is a joke. We will be bringing this up at the annual meetings as this should not be allowed. Had Portland wanted him, they should have had to offered a higher salary, it smells like collusion to me."
The Werewolves of London have shown last year may not have been princess luck, as they have started the season 5-0.
