Toronto, ON). The Wolfpack made a major trade today sending Brian Rolston, Brett Clark, and Scott Hartnell to the Suffolk Fox for Pavel Kubina, Chris Drury, and Suffolk 2011 1st round draft choice. The deal has major financial considerations as the Wolfpack will buyout Drury and his $6m annual salary both this year and next. The buyout option is estimated at around $3m. Fans of the Wolfpack may be dismayed that some of their core were dealt in this deal, but there seems to be a plan in place in Toronto.
GM Thom Welch said, "this deal was difficult as GM Rich McCarthy of the Suffolk Fox did not want to part with a shutdown defender that Toronto wanted. At the end of the day, we accepted this for the future of our club. Drury is not in our plans so will be cut from our roster. We like Pavel for this year and will assess his status after the season. The additional draft choice gives us three #1 picks in this year's Hobey Baker entry draft. We hope that those picks are building blocks for the team going forward. We wish Brian, Scott, and Brett well with the Fox, they are a solid team that should go deep in the playoffs."
This trade is a major roster shakeup, but opens up roster space for Kessel, Modin, and newly acquired Eric Fehr. Welch said," part of the plan was to get some minutes for some of the new guys and move Frederic and Phil into a more prominent role in the lineup, and insert Eric into the lineup."
