Toronto, ON). The Toronto Wolfpack today handed Cup Champion Vancouver Jackals there first loss of the season in the Wolfpack home opener. The offense was on display as Toronto put up seven goals on the vaunted Jackal defense. Newcomer Steve Sullivan put up 2 goals and an assist in the win. New starting goalie Pekka Rinne was not outstanding but held the Cup Champions to 4 goals in the win on 29 shots. The offense was spread around as Kyle Wellwood, Rick Nash, Ben Guite, Sean Avery, and Alexandeer Burrows as contributed a goal a piece.
Coach O'Reilly said, " we have a solid core of forwards here that all have the capability to put up decent numbers this season. We are looking for continued effort from the young core and expect Rick and Henrik to display there usual solid defense and two-way checking game".
Next up for the Wolfpack is the Winnepeg Bison who are looking for their first win. Toronto should not take them lightly as this team is also young and hungry for success. It appeared that the Bison were building a squad of scoring veterans with youth but recent deals that saw high scoring forwards Scott Hartnell and Brad Richards (former Wolfpacker's) traded in separate transactions has the Bison leaning on a rookie lineup once again.
In other league news, the New England Sharks dealt perennial 50 goal scorer Dany Heatley to the LA Devils for a package of picks and rookie defender Marc Staal (ex-Wolfpack). This is a curious move as the Sharks were building a squad that looked like a potential Cup contender, however now it may be a rebuild, tough to say as GM Rob Dumont never seems content with his roster.
