On the eve of the 2010/2011 preseason the New England Sharks made sweeping coaching changes. The old guard led by former head coach Bobby Clarke was notified that the organization was heading in a different direction. GM Bobby Brooks remarked, "This decision wasn't a reflection on the coaching job of Clarke and his assistants, but there were some philosophical differences that propelled the change."
Coming in to replace Clarke as head coach is recently retired Joe Sakic. Brooks added, "It isn't very often a person like Joe becomes available on the open market and we wanted to let him learn on the job and grow with the team moving forward." Sakic was allowed to choose his assistants and brought in Peter Forsberg and Patrick Roy. Together they will bring a new presence to the Sharks organization and hope to cultivate a culture of winning hockey.
In other news, the New England Sharks continued their wheeling and dealing this week as they sent one of their three 1st round picks in 2011 to the Notre Dame Hounds in exchange for Mike Cammalleri. Brooks on the recent addition, "Mike is going to solidify the left wing position for us and provide important secondary scoring immediately. Giving up a top draft pick wasn't easy, but we felt we were in a position to move one of them to get more immediate help." In practice today Cammalleri was seen playing alongside Duchene on the 2nd line, but also spent significant time with Crosby on the top power play unit.
