Toronto, ON). With the HBMHL entry underway and the first round complete, the Toronto Wolfpack selected Pekka Rinne as the 12th selection in the entry draft. With an outstanding resume and statistical prowess Toronto shortly thereafter completed a deal with frequent trade partner Alberta Rams and dealt starting netminder Evgeni Nabokov for tough defenseman Brad Stuart and a 4th round draft selection in 2010. This deal and the selection of Rinne appear to be done with the hope that Rinne and Stuart can replace Nabokov and Volchenkov from last year's squad.
Thom Welch Toronto GM said, " with our recent deal with New England we gained salary flexibility this deal takes our flexibility a step further and allows Evgeni a change of scenery as last year was not his best with Toronto and we project Pekka as an upgrade in net".
Toronto looks forward to Rounds 2 and 3 of the entry draft as four more players will be selected for the Wolfpack farm system. It appears that Toronto is building through the draft for the time being with UFA looming next week. Welch said, " although we have trimmed considerable payroll, our goal is to ice a young fast team with a few hard working veterans to show our rookies the right way to approach the game."
