Toronto, ON. - Toronto Wolfpack GM Tom Welch today acquired former Toronto Cup goaltender Jose Theodore from the Alberta Rams for fellow goalie Antero Niitymaki, Jiri Novotny, and ALB 2009 #4 pick. The acquisition is a reunion of sorts for Theodore who backstopped Toronto to HBMHL Championship in 2003. Welch said, "we are very happy to get Jose back in a Toronto uniform. Our goaltending is solidified now with Jose and Marc-Andre most likely sharing duties and giving Coach O'Reilly options to run with the hot hand." The deal was not expected as Fleury and Alex Auld were projected to start the year as the Toronto tandem. However, Toronto was obviously looking for more depth in the position.
In other news, Toronto is poured 49 shots on the London Werewolves today in pre-season action but it was not enough as Jose Theodore's debut was not a successful one in a 7-5 loss. Jose said, " the travel from Alberta was a bear, a blizzard hit the province right before our flight so we were delayed for 4 hours.
Coach O'Reilly gave me the option to sit out but I was too excited by the deal and decided to give it a go. In retrospect I probably should have sat this one out." The Toronto offense peppered London with 22 shots in the 3rd period indicating the offense may be quite prolific this season. Time will tell is this is the case. One thing is certain, Theodore will need to play like he did in 2003 to take Toronto deep into the playoffs this season.
