On January 6th the Spurs traded forward John Mitchell and blueliner reserve Erik Gustafsson to division rival Las Vegas for winger Jason Chimera. It is hoped Chimera can provide a little offensive punch from the right wing with his speed helping to create some scoring chances.Mitchell and Gustafsson's contracts were subsequently bought out by Las Vegas and they were released.
In another transaction the Spurs signed blueliner free agent Patrick Wiercioch to provide some blueline depth with a recent rash of injuries to their defensemen. This required the Spurs to dress 5 defensemen and 13 forwards in a couple of games recently which doesn't work very well with the defensemen exceeding their fatigue factor. When this occurs it becomes a shooting gallery for the opponent with the Spurs' goalie becoming swiss cheese. It continues to be a very disappointing season in Denver as the bankruptcy continues.
