TO Suffolk: Annti Niemi, Ruslan Fedetenko, Colin Greening, Milan Hejduk, Joey Crabb, and Dennis Seidenberg (At Day 90) and POR 2013 #1
TO Toronto: Alex Ovechkin, Steve Mason, and SUF 2013 #3
As shown the deal has many details that needed to be worked out including sending defenseman Dennis Seidenberg to Suffolk at DAY 90 of the league. A deal was processed beforehand that was disallowed by the league because league rules require UFA contracts worth over $5M per year to reside on the signing team at least 90 days. This was a major impediment to the deal that needed to be worked out by the GM's and league office. Another problem was the finances in Toronto that limited the potential for the team to add payroll. This was remedied earlier in the day with Toronto trading a draft choice for cash.
In the end, GM Welch is happy, "we worked real hard at this deal. Our team can't find the back of the net right now, and Alex was a top priority for us. Losing all our these assets was tough as Annti is a top netminder, Colin and Joey are good prospects, and the top draft pick is always tough to move. Dennis will help us for the next few weeks during the transition period for Alex and then move to the Fox. But to get something, you have to give, and in the end, our fans deserve better. "
Coach Pedersen was asked for a comment in acquiring Alexander the Great, "we are excited obviously. I hope he is ready to work because we are playing him everywhere. Nic has already got plans for him on the first line...ha."
