More Changes in Portland

The shake-up in Portland last season produced a change in direction, attitude and in fact, results. We were competitive in most games and with the reduced payroll, managed a bit of a financial turnaround. While the Winter Hawks did not make the playoffs, they managed to sweep the Dixie Cup rounds to finish on a positive and financially rewarding note.

In a previous post, there were indications that more changes may be coming. The Rose Garden and the Winter Hawks were at odds in negotiating a new lease arrangement for the upcoming season. Rather than risk falling further into a financial abyss, PWH were obligated to consider alternatives. Happily, we have concluded an exceptional arrangement that will see the Winter Hawks relocating to new ice for the coming season and many years to come.

Henceforth, the Winter Hawks of Portland will now be called the Portland Platoon and play at The Armory. While the seating capacity is somewhat less, the atmosphere will be incredible with fans closer to the action than ever before. Fans will be standing in the aisles as there isn’t a good seat in the house. (Literally, but we hope to get them fixed with our playoff bonuses next year!)

Of course, a change of venue and a change of name requires a change in uniforms too. Gunney is convinced that he can spring wingers loose behind the opposing D by dressing the team in winter camouflage. “Can you see me now?” will become the refrain as the Platoon find themselves on an endless series of breakaways! Dr. Phil is advising that the sense of invisibility will inspire the players to new heights of confidence which will no doubt manifest itself in improved play. “Dick” Simmonds is less enthusiastic about the uniforms, having preferred something in more of a fuchsia tone, but is starting to warm to the “men-in-uniform” militaristic theme.

It’s been a big year in Portland and we are looking to take even longer strides next year. (We had to tell Richard that “strokes” was not a skating term). The Platoon are set to invade the HBMHL play offs next year and will enforce our “take no prisoners” policy. Penalties are still OK.
