Toronto continues rebuild..makes two major deals.

Toronto, ON. The Toronto Wolfpack continue to revamp thier roster with two major moves nearing the HBMHL trading deadline. First the Wolfpack dealt franchise goaltender Henrik Lundqvist and a 4th round draft choice to the Suffolk Fox for stopper Marc-Andre fleury, checker Manny Malhotra, prospect Lucas Krajicek and a 3rd round draft choice. Then today the Wolfpack sent power forward and power play specialist Ryan Smyth to Cup Contender London Werewolves for stud forward Scott Thornton and 4 players including potential top 4 defender Nathan Paetsch, and grinding forward Jordan Tootoo.

GM Tom Welch had this to say about a busy week in Toronto, " we are trying to remain competitive and build for the future while maintaining a reasonable payroll. Henrik is an exceptional goaltender but for some reason could not turn the corner for us. We feel Fleury has All-Star potential and carries essentially the same contract as Henrik and will remain under our control long term. We like Manny as well and he will compete with Conroy for a checking role on our team. Ryan Smyth played well for us in the short term but had a franchise level contract. London GM Mark Wendling made a nice offer including the coveted Scott Hartnell and we felt this deal would enhance our future and also give financial flexibility heading in free agency next year. We like the potential upside of Paetsch and Tootoo as well.

Overall Toronto has gotten younger after initially going heavily into free agency this off season. Toronto has also added a bounty of draft choices including two 1st round draft choices, one 2nd round draft choice, and four 3rd round selections in the 2008 entry draft. Welch said, " we feel good about our future, unfortunately we have not performed up to expectation this season, but we hope to upset a few teams in the playoffs and see what happens. We may have a deal or two left, but nothing as significant as this week".
